Doha, Aug. 5 (SANA) Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed on Tuesday regional developments and diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions between Washington and Tehran, according to the Qatar News Agency.
During a phone call, the two leaders discussed efforts to facilitate dialogue between the United States and Iran and support a lasting diplomatic resolution to the crisis in the region.
Sheikh Tamim stressed the importance of continuing dialogue and using diplomatic channels to address outstanding issues. He also called on all parties to uphold commitments made under a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran and reaffirmed Qatar’s support for international efforts to contain tensions and promote regional and international security.
Trump highlighted Qatar’s role in supporting diplomatic initiatives and facilitating dialogue between the parties, according to the report.
The two leaders also discussed issues of mutual interest and emphasized the importance of continued coordination and consultation on regional and international developments.
On July 8, Trump announced the termination of a memorandum of understanding with Iran that had been signed on June 18 as part of efforts to end the conflict, following renewed tensions and a resumption of military exchanges between Washington and Tehran.
The call came after Trump announced on Sunday that he had canceled a planned military strike against Iran, saying the decision was linked to the possibility of reaching a swift agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and address concerns over Iran’s nuclear program.
