Kyiv, July 4 (SANA) More than 200 locomotives have been destroyed or damaged in Russian attacks since the beginning of 2026, Ukraine’s government said on Saturday, underscoring the mounting toll on the country’s railway infrastructure.
Reuters quoted Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration Oleksiy Kuleba as saying that Russian forces have continued targeting railway locomotives, leaving more than 200 destroyed or damaged since the start of the year.
Kuleba said two additional locomotives were damaged in an attack on Friday evening in Ukraine‘s eastern Dnipropetrovsk region, adding that the continued strikes have increased the need for repairs and placed additional financial strain on the railway sector.
He said the railway network is critical to Ukraine’s economy, handling more than 90% of the country’s export shipments, making it a frequent target of Russian attacks.
According to Kuleba, railway infrastructure has come under more than 1,000 attacks since the beginning of the year, causing extensive damage to the country’s transport network.
