Geneva, June.26 (SANA) Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management Raed al-Saleh met with President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Abdulla al-Mandous on Thursday to examine ways of strengthening cooperation between Syria and the organization.
The meeting, held at the WMO headquarters in Geneva, focused on enhancing cooperation in the development of Syria’s meteorological observation infrastructure, the modernization of early warning systems, and improving the technical capacity of the National Meteorological Centre.
The two sides also reviewed Syria’s technical and operational requirements for upgrading the centre’s capabilities, including support for meteorological observation technologies, data sharing, technical expertise and national capacity-building, with the aim of improving weather forecasting services and bolstering disaster preparedness and climate-risk response.
The meeting followed the conclusion on Wednesday of the Syria Mine Action Stakeholders Conference, held in Geneva under the chairmanship of Minister al-Saleh in partnership with the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD), with support from the European Union, Germany and Switzerland, and the participation of Syrian institutions, international partners and donor representatives.
Since its opening on Monday, the conference featured extensive technical and policy discussions focusing on landmine and unexploded ordnance contamination in Syria, its humanitarian and economic consequences, existing gaps in survey and clearance operations, and efforts to address the impact of explosive remnants of war on civilian lives, recovery and reconstruction.
