Worldwide military expenditure rises 2.9% to record $2.887 trillion in 2025

Washington, June 11 (SANA) Global military expenditure reached approximately $2.887 trillion in 2025, representing a 2.9% increase in real terms compared with 2024, according to data released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

According to figures published by CNN, military spending declined in the United States, while it increased by 14% in Europe and 8.1% in Asia and Oceania.

The United States, China and Russia together accounted for about $1.48 trillion in military expenditure, representing 51% of total global military spending.

The report said the global military burden, measured as military expenditure as a share of world gross domestic product, rose to 2.5% in 2025 from 2.4% in the previous year.

Military spending accounted for an average of 6.9% of government expenditure worldwide, while global per capita military expenditure reached approximately $352.

Ukraine ranked first globally in terms of military burden, with military spending equivalent to 40% of its GDP and 63% of total government expenditure.

Among Arab countries, Algeria recorded the highest military expenditure as a share of GDP in 2025 at 8.83%, followed by Saudi Arabia at 6.48% and Oman at 5.68%.
Kuwait ranked fourth at 4.69%, followed by Jordan at 4.56%, Morocco at 3.54% and Bahrain at 3.11%.

Military expenditure reached 2.75% of GDP in Mauritania, 2.51% in Lebanon, 2.49% in Tunisia and 2.45% in Iraq.

Egypt recorded the lowest military expenditure ratio among the Arab countries listed in the report, at 0.61% of GDP.

The figures come amid continuing geopolitical tensions and rising defense spending in various regions around the world.
