U.S. House backs measure to halt Iran war amid congressional concerns

Washington, June 4 (SANA) The U.S. House of Representatives approved a Democratic-led resolution on Wednesday calling for an end to military operations against Iran unless Congress formally authorizes the hostilities, reflecting growing concern among lawmakers over the continuation of the war.

According to Reuters, the measure passed by a vote of 215 to 208 after four Republican lawmakers joined Democrats in supporting the war powers resolution. The vote marked another legislative setback for U.S. President Donald Trump despite his party holding narrow majorities in both chambers of Congress.

The resolution is largely symbolic at this stage. It must still pass the Senate before taking effect and would require two-thirds majorities in both the House and Senate to override a presidential veto, which Trump is widely expected to issue if the measure reaches his desk.

The House vote follows the failure of three previous war powers resolutions by increasingly narrow margins. Last month, the Senate advanced a separate but similar measure in a procedural vote after seven earlier attempts had failed.
