Caracas, May 24 (SANA) Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said she intends to run in the country’s next presidential election, despite authorities not yet announcing an official date for the vote.
“I will run,” Machado said during a visit to Panama, where she met members of the Venezuelan community, according to Agence France-Presse.
Machado voiced support for recent U.S. policies toward Venezuela and thanked U.S. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for measures taken against the government in Caracas.
Her announcement comes months after U.S. forces arrested Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Jan. 3 and transferred him to the United States. Washington later said it hoped new elections would be organized in Venezuela.
Former Vice President Delcy Rodriguez is currently serving as acting president and overseeing government affairs pending an official announcement on the timing of the next presidential election.
