Brussels, May 19 (SANA) NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe Gen. Alexus Grynkewich downplayed concerns Tuesday over U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw American troops from Germany, insisting the move will not undermine the alliance’s defenses.
“This decision does not affect the implementation of NATO’s regional plans,” Grynkewich told reporters. He added that as member states continue to strengthen their capabilities, the U.S. can redeploy some of its forces to meet global priorities. “I am very confident in our current posture,” he said.
Washington announced on May 1 that it would withdraw about 5,000 troops from Germany within a year, roughly 15 percent of U.S. forces stationed in Europe. Last Friday, the U.S. also canceled a planned deployment of more than 4,000 troops to Poland.
