Damascus, May 1 (SANA) Canada’s Ambassador to Syria Gregory Galligan on Friday welcomed the country’s significant progress in press freedom following a 36-place rise in global rankings.
In a post on X, Galligan described the improvement as a “notable shift in direction,” calling it the largest annual gain since the index was established. He stressed the importance of sustaining this momentum to ensure journalists can operate freely, safely, and without fear.
The latest Press Freedom Index, released Thursday by Reporters Without Borders, showed Syria rising to 141st place globally, up from 177th last year among 180 countries, marking the biggest single-year improvement recorded since the report’s launch 25 years ago.
