US Navy secretary resigns, Pentagon confirms immediate departure
Secretary of the Navy John Phelan

Washington, April 23 (SANA) The Pentagon announced Wednesday that US Secretary of the Navy John Phelan has resigned from his position, marking another senior-level departure within the administration.

In a statement posted on social media, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said Phelan was “departing the administration, effective immediately,” without providing further details on the reasons behind the move.

Parnell said Navy Undersecretary Hung Cao will assume the role of acting Secretary of the Navy.

He added that, on behalf of the US defense secretary and his deputy, the department expressed appreciation for Phelan’s service to both the Pentagon and the US Navy.

The announcement comes amid ongoing US naval operations, including what officials have described as a blockade on Iranian ports during a ceasefire period between Washington and Tehran.

The resignation follows another cabinet-level departure earlier this week, when Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer stepped down, in what appears to be a series of changes within the US administration.
