Paris, April 18 (SANA) French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Saturday that a French soldier was killed and three others were wounded in an attack targeting the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
In a post on his X account, Macron said the evidence points to Hezbollah as being responsible. He urged Lebanese authorities to act swiftly to apprehend the perpetrators and fulfill their obligations alongside UNIFIL forces.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the attack on the French battalion serving within UNIFIL, expressing strong disapproval.
In a statement carried by the Lebanese National News Agency, Salam said he had ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances of the incident, which occurred in the Ghandouriyeh–Bint Jbeil area, and called for those responsible to be held accountable.
The Lebanese Army also condemned the assault, emphasizing its close coordination with UNIFIL during this sensitive period and pledging to conduct the necessary investigations.
According to the army, the attack took place during a UNIFIL patrol in the same area and followed an exchange of gunfire with armed individuals, resulting in injuries among patrol members.
The incident comes amid a ten-day ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump between Israel and Lebanon, further complicating the security situation in the region.
