New York, April 8 (SANA) U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, urging all sides to honor the agreement and use it as a foundation for wider peace efforts.
In a statement carried by U.N. News, Guterres called on parties to comply with international law and fully adhere to the terms of the ceasefire, saying this could help open a path toward a comprehensive and sustainable resolution to the conflict.
He stressed the urgent need to halt hostilities to protect civilians and ease growing humanitarian suffering amid ongoing regional tensions.
Guterres also expressed appreciation for diplomatic efforts by Pakistan and other countries that helped facilitate the ceasefire.
He added that his personal envoy, Jean Arnault, is currently in the region to support efforts to achieve lasting peace.
The ceasefire followed an announcement earlier Wednesday by U.S. President Donald Trump of a two-week suspension of U.S. military strikes against Iran, which he described as a “complete and total victory” while signaling progress toward a broader deal tied to reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
