Guterres announces task force to facilitate trade through Hormuz
UN Secretary-General António Guterres

New York, 28 March (SANA) UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced on Friday the formation of an international “task force” aimed at developing technical mechanisms to secure humanitarian needs and facilitate the movement of fertilizer and raw material trade through the Strait of Hormuz.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said that “any disruption to navigation through the strait carries severe consequences for agricultural production and essential supplies,” stressing the Secretariat’s commitment to taking immediate measures to mitigate these risks.

Dujarric explained that the task force will be led by UNOPS Executive Director Jorge Moreira da Silva and will include representatives from UNCTAD, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).

Guterres had warned last Wednesday that “the war in the Middle East has spiraled out of control, and the conflict has expanded beyond what even leaders had imagined,” calling on “the United States and Israel to halt the war, and on Iran to stop attacking its neighboring countries.”
