London, March 21 (SANA) An explosion was reported near a cargo ship off the coast of the United Arab Emirates caused by an “unknown projectile,” the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said in a statement.
The incident occurred about 15 nautical miles from the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route, with no injuries reported among the crew, according to UKMTO, as cited by AFP.
The agency did not provide details on the origin of the projectile or the extent of any damage to the vessel.
The incident comes amid rising security concerns in regional shipping lanes following Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz in response to U.S. and Israeli strikes on its territory since late February.
Earlier on Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that Washington would strike Iranian energy infrastructure unless Tehran fully reopened the strategic waterway within 48 hours.
