London, March 17 (SANA) – The United Kingdom has announced plans to establish a defense partnership with Ukraine aimed at countering the growing threat of low-cost drones, as modern warfare increasingly relies on unmanned systems and electronic capabilities.
In a statement ahead of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to London, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that drones, electronic warfare, and rapid battlefield innovation have become central to both national and economic security, a trend highlighted by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
The proposed agreement includes funding a £500,000 ($670,000) “AI Center of Excellence” within Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense, designed to leverage Ukraine’s battlefield experience in intercepting drones, alongside British industrial expertise in drone production and supply.
Starmer stressed that strengthening defense partnerships will enhance Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against Russian attacks, while also improving preparedness among the UK and its allies to face emerging security threats, particularly the proliferation of low-cost, advanced military technologies.
Zelensky’s visit comes amid concerns in Kyiv that the war in the Middle East could divert international attention away from Ukraine, although European allies have reaffirmed their continued support, even as shifting global dynamics—including adjustments to sanctions on Russia—reshape the broader geopolitical landscape.
