UN warns war may intensify repression in Iran

Geneva, March 12 (SANA) The United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran warned that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could intensify institutional repression in Iran.

In a report submitted to the UN Security Council, the mission said the Iranian people are caught between a large-scale military escalation and a government with a long record of serious human rights violations. It said the human rights situation could deteriorate further following recent U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory attacks across the region.

The mission said civilian protection is increasingly at risk during armed conflict, particularly amid widespread internet and communication shutdowns. It urged all parties to halt military operations immediately to prevent additional harm to civilians in Iran and the wider region.

The report said many violations committed by Iranian authorities — including killing, arbitrary detention, torture, sexual violence and enforced disappearance — may amount to crimes against humanity as part of a widespread and systematic attack on civilians.

Established in November 2022, the three-member mission is mandated to collect and document evidence of human rights violations in Iran.
