South Korea considers Trump request to send warships to Strait of Hormuz
U.S. President Donald Trump request sending naval vessels to the Strait of Hormuz

Seoul, March 15 (SANA) – South Korea said Sunday it is reviewing a request by U.S. President Donald Trump to send naval vessels to the Strait of Hormuz, as concerns grow over disruptions to global shipping in the region.

According to the Yonhap News Agency, a presidential office official said the government is closely coordinating with the United States and carefully examining the proposal.

The official noted that the safety of international maritime transport routes and freedom of navigation align with the interests of all countries and are protected under international law.

Trump said Saturday he hoped South Korea and other countries affected by Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz would send ships to help keep the strategic oil transit route open and secure.

The South Korean government said it is monitoring developments in the Middle East and consultations among the countries concerned, while reviewing measures to protect its citizens and safeguard energy supply routes.

South Korea currently operates the Cheonghae naval unit in the Gulf of Aden, where it conducts anti-piracy missions.
