Madrid, Mar.15 (SANA) The Spanish government condemned the Israeli attack that targeted a health centre in the city of Bint Jbeil in southern Lebanon, which resulted in the death of 12 members of medical and emergency teams.
In an official statement issued by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and published on its official website, Madrid described the attacks against medical facilities in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip as a “flagrant and unacceptable violation” of international humanitarian law.
The statement stressed the need to conduct transparent investigations into these incidents, reaffirming the legal principle that “hospitals are not military targets.”
According to the statement, Spain reiterated its full commitment to ensuring the protection of doctors and healthcare workers in conflict zones, noting their vital role in saving lives.
Spain also denounced attacks that targeted the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which recently damaged barracks belonging to the Nepalese battalion after a fire broke out following shelling.
The statement affirmed Madrid’s full support for the mandate of UNIFIL, as well as the need to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, while calling for guarantees for the security and safety of United Nations personnel.
The Spanish Foreign Ministry concluded its statement by offering condolences to the families of the victims and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
Earlier, the Lebanese Ministry of Health announced that 12 healthcare workers were killed in an Israeli air strike that targeted a primary healthcare centre in the town of Borj Qallawiyah in southern Lebanon.
The ministry said the victims included doctors, paramedics and nurses who were on duty at the centre, while one healthcare worker was injured.
The situation in Lebanon has experienced a dangerous escalation since early Monday, after Hezbollah launched rockets at Israeli positions, prompting Israel to carry out air strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs and several areas in southern and eastern Lebanon, resulting in hundreds of casualties.
