Baghdad, March.14 (SANA) A drone struck the compound of the U.S. Embassy in the Iraqi capital early Saturday, sending black smoke billowing over the heavily fortified diplomatic zone, security sources said.
An Iraqi security official told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that the drone directly hit the embassy compound, without providing immediate details on possible casualties or damage.
The attack comes amid escalating tensions following a series of strikes targeting the Iraqi Kataib Hezbollah militia in Baghdad.
According to security officials, a rocket struck a building used by the militia as a headquarters, killing one member and wounding two others. In a separate incident, another rocket hit a vehicle carrying a militia fighter in the al-Nahrawan area east of Baghdad, killing him.
Since February 28, Israel and the United States have launched attacks on Iran, which has responded by firing missiles and drones toward Israel and carrying out attacks across several countries in the region.
