New York, March 11 (SANA) Qatar condemned Iran’s violation of its sovereignty following missile and drone attacks on its territory and said it reserves the right to respond to protect its national security, according to a letter submitted to the United Nations.
Qatar’s permanent representative to the UN, Alya Ahmed Saif Al Thani, sent identical letters to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the president of the Security Council outlining the repeated Iranian attacks on the country.
According to the Qatar News Agency (QNA), the letter said the attacks constituted a “blatant violation” of Qatar’s sovereignty and posed a threat to regional security and stability.
The letter said Qatar was targeted by 17 ballistic missiles and six drones launched from Iran as of Monday afternoon, March 9. Qatari armed forces intercepted the projectiles and no casualties were reported.
In the message, Qatar said it retains the right to respond in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter, which allows self-defense in response to armed attacks, and that any response would be proportional to the scale of the incident.
The development comes amid escalating regional tensions following the outbreak of a conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran on Feb. 28, which has led to Iranian missile and drone strikes across several countries in the region.
