Paris, March 10 (SANA) UNESCO on Monday warned that escalating military tensions in the Middle East pose growing risks to education, cultural heritage, media institutions and the environment.
In a statement, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization said teachers, students and educational facilities were increasingly exposed to the effects of the worsening security situation. It added that media and scientific institutions were also at risk.
The agency said continued hostilities could disrupt education systems, endanger learning environments and restrict access to information, while also threatening cultural and scientific sites.
UNESCO called on all parties to respect international law and ensure the protection of schools, students, education personnel, journalists and media workers.
The warning comes amid heightened tensions across the region. Since Feb. 28, the conflict has intensified following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran and Iranian missile and drone attacks on key facilities in several regional countries.
Lebanon has also seen a sharp increase in violence after rocket fire by Hezbollah militia and subsequent Israeli airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs as well as areas in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley, resulting in casualties.
