Brussels, March 2 (SANA) NATO is adjusting the deployment of its forces as it monitors escalating tensions in the Middle East linked to the conflict involving Iran, a senior alliance spokesperson said Monday.
Col. Martin O’Donnell, spokesperson for NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), said the alliance is closely tracking developments in Iran and across the Middle East and will continue to modify its force posture to ensure the security of member states and defend against potential threats.
In a statement, O’Donnell said NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, U.S. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, remains in regular contact with military leaders on both sides of the Atlantic and with NATO Secretary-General to assess the situation and determine appropriate measures.
He added that the alliance is prepared to adjust deployments to guard against possible threats, including ballistic missiles or drones that could be launched from the region or elsewhere.
The comments come as exchanges of strikes between Israel and the United States on one side and Iran on the other have intensified. Iranian attacks have expanded to include Gulf Arab states and Jordan, and Iranian forces were said Monday to have targeted a British military base in Cyprus, a development viewed as raising security concerns for Europe and NATO.
