Damascus, Jan. 29 (SANA) The Royal Humanitarian Foundation of Bahrain and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Thursday signed a $2 million grant to support the reconstruction of homes for Syrian families returning to al-Zerba in Aleppo province and Harasta in the Damascus countryside.
UNHCR spokesperson Celine Schmitt told SANA that the project will rehabilitate about 470 damaged apartments, benefiting roughly 2,350 people, with priority given to the most vulnerable households, including female-headed families and people with disabilities.
“Rehabilitation efforts will include repairing walls, roofs, and foundations, installing solar-powered lighting in areas with limited electricity, and upgrading water, sanitation and hygiene facilities,” Schmitt said. She added that plumbing networks and solar water heaters will also be restored to ensure safe and clean living conditions for returning families.
The Bahrain-funded project forms part of broader international support for UNHCR programs aimed at assisting refugees and internally displaced Syrians and facilitating voluntary returns.
In this context, the Japanese government and the UNHCR Representative in Syria signed official memoranda last December for a $5.37 million grant to fund UNHCR programs, aimed at strengthening humanitarian services and improving response capacities across Syria.
