Rome, Feb. 24 (SANA) – The United Nations has reported that food insecurity in Somalia has nearly doubled over the past year, driven by worsening drought, soaring food prices and persistent insecurity.
According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), the number of people classified as facing “crisis or worse” levels of food insecurity rose to around 6.5 million between early 2025 and February 2026.
The IPC said the situation has been exacerbated by declining humanitarian assistance, alongside consecutive drought seasons and economic pressures, while levels of acute malnutrition have increased significantly over the past two years.
Separately, the World Food Program warned that Somalia is facing one of its most severe hunger crises in recent years, citing rainfall failure, ongoing conflict and a sharp drop in humanitarian funding.
