Amman, Feb. 23 (SANA) — The Arab Peace Group has condemned comments by US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee supporting Israeli occupation’s expansion in the region, warning they risk fueling a serious escalation.
In a statement carried by Jordan’s Petra news agency, the group said the ambassador’s remarks amount to a grave violation of the sovereignty of several Arab countries and run counter to international law, UN resolutions and the UN Charter.
The group cautioned that such positions could sharply heighten tensions and inflict severe damage on regional security and stability. It stressed that US ties with Arab states are strategic on political, economic and security levels, while Israeli policies are deepening regional crises instead of promoting stability.
Reiterating its stance, the Arab Peace Group said a just and comprehensive peace cannot be achieved without respect for states’ sovereignty and internationally recognized borders, and recognition of the Palestinian people’s right to establish an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
Huckabee’s weekend remarks about Israel’s expansion were met with widespread condemnation across the Arab and Islamic worlds, where governments and organizations denounced them as a blatant breach of international law and the UN Charter.
