Amman, Jan. 15 (SANA) A moderate earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale struck the Dead Sea region on Thursday morning. There were no reports of casualties.
The Jordanian News Agency “Petra” quoted Ghassan Sweidan, head of the Jordanian Seismological Observatory, as saying that the tremor occurred at 10:00 a.m. in the Ghor Al-Safi area, at a depth of 17 kilometers. This places it within the active seismic zone of the Dead Sea Transform Fault.
Sweidan added that the earthquake was mild and caused no damage. He also confirmed that it was not followed by any aftershocks.
