Geneva, Jan.14 (SANA) The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said on Tuesday that more than 100 Palestinian children have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the start of a ceasefire nearly three months ago, as Israeli attacks have continued despite a reduction in fighting.
UNICEF spokesperson James Elder told reporters in Geneva that survival in Gaza “remains far from guaranteed,” stressing that while Israeli bombardment and gunfire have decreased since the ceasefire took effect, they have not stopped.
“More than 100 children, including 60 boys and 40 girls, have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire,” Elder said. “That means, on average, a boy or a girl is being killed every day during what is supposed to be a ceasefire.”
Elder said the figure is likely an underestimate, as it is based only on cases where sufficient information was available to confirm the deaths.
He called for unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza, a significant increase in medical evacuations, and what he described as an immediate and genuine halt to the killing of children.
Israeli occupation forces continue to carry out daily violations of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, amid increasingly dire humanitarian conditions, worsened by harsh weather and ongoing shelling, according to local and humanitarian sources.
