Lagos, Jan. 6 (SANA) At least eight soldiers were killed in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Borno State, in northeastern Nigeria.
A military source told Agence France-Presse that members of the terrorist organization ISIS in West Africa detonated the device on Sunday evening while soldiers were stopped on the road between Gubio and Damasak. The attack highlights the group’s expanding capability to operate beyond its usual areas.
Nigeria continues to face attacks by armed groups in the northeast, including ISIS. According to United Nations figures, such attacks since 2009 have resulted in more than 40,000 deaths and forced nearly two million people to flee their homes.
