Gaza faces building collapses and worsening humanitarian crisis

Gaza, Dec. 26 (SANA) Humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip are worsening as ongoing Israeli attacks continue to devastate infrastructure, leaving residents exposed to collapsing buildings, harsh winter conditions, and limited access to essential aid.

Gaza Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal warned that thousands of homes partially damaged by Israeli strikes could collapse at any moment, putting hundreds of thousands of Palestinians at risk. Despite the dangers, some residents have returned to their damaged homes, citing tents as inadequate shelter, especially during severe weather.

According to Gaza’s government media office, 27,000 tents housing displaced families were affected by the recent “Byron” polar low, which caused 12 casualties, including deaths and missing persons. In addition, 13 damaged buildings collapsed from previous strikes, compounding the risks from extreme weather, including flash floods, storms, and high sea waves.

The Palestinian Ministry of Public Works and Housing reported that Israeli attacks have destroyed 352,000 housing units, including 200,000 completely destroyed homes and 60,000 partially damaged, affecting more than 90 percent of civilian infrastructure in the Strip. International organizations, including the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross, have warned that the destruction of residential buildings continues to exacerbate civilian suffering, leaving thousands of families without safe shelter.

Reconstruction faces major challenges, as Israeli restrictions prevent the entry of building materials and heavy machinery needed to clear rubble. The UN estimates the reconstruction cost at $70 billion, with debris removal expected to take several years due to limited equipment and hazards from unexploded ordnance and toxic materials.

Since the Israeli assault began on October 7, 2023, over 242,000 Palestinians have been killed or injured. Despite a ceasefire agreement on October 10, Israel has continued attacks and restricted humanitarian aid deliveries.

UN agencies warn that the humanitarian situation remains dire, with harsh winter weather worsening conditions for displaced families. UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said approximately 1.6 million people in Gaza face severe food insecurity, noting that conditions remain fragile despite the ceasefire.
