INTERPOL General Assembly calls for global approach to combating cybercrime

The General Assembly of the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) has urged member states to adopt a unified international approach to combating cybercrime and to ratify the UN convention addressing such offenses.

In a statement issued during its 93rd session in Marrakech on Wednesday, the Assembly emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation and information-sharing between INTERPOL, its member states, and law-enforcement agencies worldwide.

The Assembly also highlighted the importance of developing secure police communications systems, particularly the “Nexus” platform, along with enhancing criminal data analysis and expanding cybercrime-prevention programs.

It further called for closer coordination between national central bureaus and UN member-state representatives to increase INTERPOL’s engagement at conferences of States Parties, stressing the need to integrate INTERPOL’s mechanisms into relevant UN and multilateral structures.

The 93rd General Assembly session began Monday in Marrakech and runs through Friday, with a Syrian delegation led by Maj. Gen. Abdul Kader Tahan, Deputy Interior Minister for Security Affairs, in attendance.

INTERPOL, which comprises 196 member countries, facilitates international police cooperation to combat transnational crime.
