Qatar has been elected to the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for the 2026–2028 term during the 30th session of the Conference of States Parties, currently underway in The Hague.
Qatar News Agency (QNA) said the election reflects the confidence of the international community and organizations in Qatar’s constructive role in supporting the objectives of the OPCW, strengthening effective implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention and compliance with its provisions, thereby contributing to international peace and security.
The OPCW, established in April 1997 and headquartered in The Hague, is mandated to ensure the destruction of existing chemical weapons and prevent their re-emergence. It also provides assistance and protection in the event of chemical weapons use and promotes international cooperation in peaceful applications of chemistry.
The Executive Council is composed of 41 member states elected by the Conference of States Parties on a rotating basis every two years. The Council oversees the activities of the Technical Secretariat and is responsible for promoting effective implementation of the Convention and compliance with its terms.
