The Japanese parliament has elected Sanae Takaichi as Prime Minister, making her the first woman to hold the office in the country’s history.
According to NHK, Takaichi won the parliamentary vote to select the next prime minister, marking a historic milestone for female leadership in Japan.
She secured 237 votes, surpassing the majority in the 465-seat lower house.
Takaichi, leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), is set to form a coalition government with the Japan Innovation Party and will assume office following her formal appointment by the Emperor.
She will succeed Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, ending a three-month political vacuum after the LDP’s defeat in the July elections.
Ishiba resigned with his cabinet earlier on Tuesday, having held the position for one year.
The LDP and Japan Innovation Party agreed yesterday to form a coalition government, with Innovation Party members voting in favor of Takaichi.
