The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly opens in New York on Tuesday, with President Ahmad al-Sharaa and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani, the Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, joining world leaders and top officials for the annual gathering.
President al-Sharaa is poised to make history as the first Syrian leader to address the UNGA in nearly six decades. The last speech by a Syrian president was delivered in 1967 by former President Nureddin al-Atassi. Neither Hafez nor Bashar al-Assad ever addressed the assembly.
