Damascus, April 23 (SANA) The 42nd Annual Conference of the Syrian Society of Ophthalmologists opened in Damascus with the participation of more than 500 doctors and academics from Syria and several Arab and foreign countries.
Held over three days at the Seven Gates Hotel, the conference features scientific sessions on the latest developments in eye medicine, including advances in the treatment and diagnosis of corneal disease, retinal disorders, strabismus, refractive surgery, cataract operations, glaucoma and cosmetic eye procedures.
The program also includes practical training for resident doctors using artificial eyes, in addition to live-streamed workshops showcasing specialized surgeries performed in several hospitals, alongside an exhibition of ophthalmic equipment, medical supplies and pharmaceuticals.
Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Marwan al-Halabi said specialized medical conferences provide an important platform for improving scientific and clinical performance, strengthening continuing medical education and linking research with practice.

He added that Syria is pursuing a broader modernization path that includes upgrading equipment and optical laboratories, improving residency and training programs, expanding applied research, and introducing digital technologies and artificial intelligence into diagnosis and treatment.
Health Minister Musab al-Ali said the conference offers a valuable opportunity to exchange expertise and support the continued development of ophthalmology in Syria, stressing the ministry’s commitment to expanding training opportunities and improving healthcare services.
Head of the Syrian Society of Ophthalmologists Anas al-Jard said the gathering brings together leading doctors and specialists from inside and outside Syria after years of limited engagement, helping advance eye care sciences and raise service standards for citizens.
