Water Shortage threatens agriculture in Jabal al-Akrad, Latakia countryside

Latakia, SANA-As displaced families return to Jabal al-Akrad in northern Latakia, farmers face a severe water shortage that threatens agricultural sustainability and community stability.

The Directorate of Agriculture has launched measures to address the crisis, including promoting drought-resistant crops, rain-fed farming, and modern irrigation methods. Rehabilitation of 160 wells, expansion of water harvesting projects, and construction of reservoirs are also planned.

Farmers, however, warn that the lack of water overshadows their return. Many of them call for the revival of old water pipelines and stress urgent support to reduce pressure on Salma spring, the main source now serving most villages.

The crisis underscores the urgent need to rehabilitate infrastructure and secure reliable water resources to restore agriculture as the backbone of countryside Latakia’s economy.
