Damascus, June 2 (SANA) Syria’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Tuesday with Chinese biotechnology firm Etuwa Biotechnology to establish and operate a specialized center for cell therapy research, innovation and clinical applications in Syria.
The agreement was signed at the ministry’s headquarters in the presence of Higher Education Minister Marwan al-Halabi. It was signed on behalf of the ministry by Deputy Minister for Scientific Affairs and Scientific Research Ghaith Waraqzouq, and on behalf of the company by Chief Technology Officer Muhannad al-Darwish.
The MoU provides a framework for cooperation in establishing and operating the center, including the development of research and clinical infrastructure, implementation of research programs and clinical trials, training and qualification of national cadres, exchange of expertise, and transfer of advanced biotechnology in accordance with applicable regulations and health standards.
Al-Halabi described the agreement as the first step in a broader partnership, reaffirming the ministry’s commitment to supporting the project. He said the initiative would help strengthen international scientific cooperation in advanced biomedical fields, enhance Syria’s research and healthcare capabilities, and create new opportunities for researchers, physicians and academic institutions.
Al-Darwish said the center will focus on developing and applying innovative therapies, particularly for the treatment of various types of cancer.
He added that it will also offer advanced diagnostic and analytical services currently unavailable in Syria, including early detection of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, as well as specialized immune-system diagnostics.
Etuwa Biotechnology, headquartered in Nanjing, China, specializes in biotechnology and medical diagnostics. The company develops and manufactures laboratory testing equipment and diagnostic kits for a range of diseases.
