New York, Sept. 22 (SANA) Syrian Finance Minister Mohammed Yisr Barnieh outlined Syria’s financial reform priorities at a high-level meeting at United Nations headquarters in New York, saying the country is moving from planning to implementation in its economic recovery.
Barnieh took part in a roundtable titled “Investing in Syria’s Recovery: Coordinating Support for Financial Sector Transformation,” organized by the Qatar Fund for Development and the Islamic Development Bank Group.
The Finance Ministry said Tuesday that the meeting brought together the governor of the Central Bank of Syria, ministers and senior officials, representatives of the U.S. Treasury Department, international financial institutions, development partners and government delegations.
Banking reform and financial integrity
Discussions focused on public financial management, banking reform, capital markets and insurance, financial integrity and reconnecting Syria with the international financial system.
The ministry said the participation reflected growing international interest in Syria’s recovery as the country moves from assessing needs and developing plans to implementing reform programs.
Barnieh said Syria was taking full responsibility for its economic recovery and was committed to comprehensive financial reform, with implementation serving as the key measure of progress.
He said Syria was not seeking dependence on external assistance but structured international partnerships aligned with national priorities, including support for institutional capacity, technical expertise and targeted development financing.
Barnieh stressed that financial integrity was central to the reform process, saying Syria would not serve as a venue for sanctions evasion or illicit financial practices and would work to build strong oversight mechanisms and a transparent, reliable financial system.
Supporting recovery and investment
Barnieh said Syria was ready to work with its partners to build a modern, transparent and resilient financial system capable of supporting recovery, attracting investment and promoting sustainable economic growth.
