Damascus, June 21 (SANA) The head of Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, Omar Hosari, announced on Sunday that final steps are being completed with authorities in the Netherlands to launch direct flights between Damascus and Amsterdam.
Hosari said in a post on the X platform that, after years of suspension, Syrian Airlines would once again operate direct services between Damascus and Amsterdam.
He added that, in light of progress on technical, legal and regulatory procedures, authorities are working this week to complete the remaining steps in preparation for launching the flights during the first week of next month. He said the move reflects Syria’s gradual return to regional and international air transport networks.
Hosari described the development as the result of sustained national efforts and technical, legal and diplomatic work.
He added that Amsterdam is the first destination in a broader expansion plan, with further international routes expected in the future.
On Thursday, Hosari said discussions with German authorities on lifting the ban on flights between Syria and Germany had made positive progress, adding that a final decision is expected in the first half of next month, which could pave the way for the resumption of direct flights after years of suspension.
He also said Syria is working with several other European countries to restore direct air links, noting that talks with some have reached final stages, with positive outcomes expected soon.
