Idlib, June 13 (SANA) Syrian Public Works and Housing Minister Mustafa Abdul Razzaq inspected work on the expansion of the Idlib-Ariha highway on Saturday, describing the route as a key transport corridor for trade and movement across northwest Syria.
The project, which passes through the al-Mastumah area, includes widening the road to 24 meters, installing a new lighting network, constructing a central median and upgrading traffic safety infrastructure.
Abdul Razzaq said the highway is one of the province’s main transport routes, linking population centers and supporting commercial traffic and daily travel.
The 14-kilometer road connects Idlib city with southern parts of the province and links to routes leading to the M4 and M5 highways, making it an important corridor for freight transport and regional commerce.
The minister said roadworks and paving are expected to take around seven months, with additional infrastructure works scheduled to continue for a further three to four months. He added that authorities are coordinating with the Ministry of Transport on other priority road projects planned across the province this year.
Idlib Governor Mohammad Abdul Rahman said the highway was selected for rehabilitation because of its economic importance and the high volume of traffic it carries. He added that work on the Bab al-Hawa-Idlib highway is nearing completion.
Deputy Transport Minister Mohammad Rahal said the project forms part of broader efforts to rehabilitate major transport routes and strengthen links between the M4 and M5 highways and the Turkish border.
The Idlib-Ariha road has long faced challenges including limited capacity, inadequate lighting and aging infrastructure, contributing to congestion and traffic accidents. Officials said the upgrade is expected to improve road safety, facilitate trade and support economic activity across the province.
