Damascus, June 8 (SANA) Agriculture Minister Basel al-Suwaidan discussed with International Rescue Committee (IRC) Country Director Cord Jossem on Monday ways to strengthen cooperation and support priorities for Syria’s agricultural sector.
During the meeting held at the ministry’s headquarters in Damascus, al-Suwaidan stressed the need to direct support toward projects that directly benefit farmers and promote sustainable agricultural development, with a focus on capacity building, digital governance, and updating agricultural regulations.
He also highlighted the importance of rapidly implementing infrastructure projects with long-term impact, reviewed key agricultural products and challenges facing production, processing, and marketing across Syria, and called for expanded cooperation in livestock development, particularly in animal health and the provision of vaccines and veterinary medicines.
Jossem, for his part, reaffirmed the IRC’s commitment to supporting Syria’s agricultural sector as a key pillar of the national economy, noting that the organization’s future strategy aligns with the ministry’s vision and priorities.

The meeting is part of ongoing efforts to enhance cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture and international organizations to support agricultural production, improve farmers’ livelihoods, and strengthen food security.
IRC is a non-governmental organization providing humanitarian and development assistance. It has operated in Syria since 2012 despite restrictions previously imposed by the deposed regime.
