Damascus, May 21 (SANA) Syrian Transport Minister, Yarub Badr, said on Thursday that rebuilding the country’s transport sector and infrastructure will require stronger investment partnerships, greater cooperation between the public and private sectors, and deeper regional integration in transport projects.
Speaking in a virtual session organized by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), Badr said the transport sector is a key driver of economic and social development, but years of damage to roads, bridges, and rail networks have sharply reduced operational capacity and created major challenges for the wider economy.
He said Syria’s transport policies are based on sustainable mobility principles, with a focus on current development priorities and the need to direct limited resources toward the most urgent areas.
He also called for a more integrated, multimodal transport system, including renewed use of railways and stronger links with ports and inland logistics hubs.
Badr stressed that limited funding makes public-private partnerships, investment attraction, and technical support essential. He also underlined the importance of regional rail cooperation with neighboring countries, saying diversified logistics routes would help strengthen resilience against crises and supply-chain disruptions.
The session focused on infrastructure challenges across the Arab region, including the impact of crises on transport, energy, and water, as well as recovery, reconstruction, and regional cooperation.
