Damascus, May 4 (SANA) Overflight traffic across Syrian airspace surged in April, signaling a rapid recovery after a brief disruption caused by regional tensions, official data showed.
Figures from the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport showed that the number of transit flights rose to 2,523 in April, up from just 32 in March following the closure of Syrian airspace due to the war involving U.S, Israel and Iran.
The volume had reached 4,267 flights in February and 5,244 in January before tensions escalated, highlighting a partial but strong rebound in air traffic.
Head of the authority Omar Hosari said the increase reflects a gradual return of international aviation activity, with Syria’s airspace regaining its role as a key corridor for regional and global routes.
In a post on X, Hosari said efforts are underway to further restore operations, including coordination with international aviation bodies to reassess safety conditions and support a broader recovery.
He added that Syria’s geographic position makes its airspace strategically important for transit flights, with traffic expected to increase as confidence returns and routes are gradually reinstated.
Separately, 12 international airlines have resumed operations to and from Damascus and Aleppo airports, indicating a wider recovery in the country’s aviation sector.
