Damascus, April 20 (SANA) The Ministry of Local Administration and Environment, in cooperation with Damascus Governorate, organized an environmental forum on Monday in Damascus to mark World Earth Day, focusing on water security and climate-related challenges.
The event, titled “Water in Our Lives,” brought together officials and specialists to discuss water pollution and its impact on groundwater and drinking supplies, as well as strategies for conservation, reuse and rainwater harvesting.
Participants highlighted the need for sustainable solutions and stressed the role of institutions and communities in protecting water resources.
Suna Shaaban, head of the Environmental Awareness Department in Damascus, told SANA the forum aims to raise public awareness of environmental risks, particularly water pollution and climate change. She said long-term efforts are needed to improve awareness despite the sector’s importance for agriculture and food security.
Chemist Iman Suleiman said the Environment Directorate is working to monitor water sources and detect pollutants through laboratory analysis, noting improvements in equipment and staff capabilities.
Mayada al-Madani, head of schools in the Sarouja sector, called for greater student participation in environmental activities and for integrating environmental topics into school curricula.
Syria marks World Earth Day annually on April 22 through activities including tree-planting campaigns and recycling initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability.
