Damascus, Feb.12 (SANA) Finance Minister Mohammed Yisr Barnieh met Wednesday with a senior regional delegation from Mastercard in Damascus to explore cooperation in digital financial development.
Barnieh said the meeting represents a continuation of a “deep and strategic dialogue” that began in the early period following liberation, in coordination with the Central Bank of Syria. He noted that earlier discussions took place on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings in Washington, as well as during the World Government Summit in Dubai.
The minister said talks focused on long-term priorities, including building a comprehensive digital financial infrastructure and enhancing sustainable financial inclusion. He added that discussions also covered practical short-term gains such as digitizing financial services and government payments, empowering small and medium-sized enterprises and strengthening confidence in the government’s financial system.
In a related development, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology signed Wednesday a memorandum of understanding with Mastercard Middle East and Africa at the Golden Mezzeh Hotel in Damascus. The agreement aims to strengthen digital and financial infrastructure in line with internationally recognized technological and development standards.
Mastercard, founded in 1966 and headquartered in the United States, operates in more than 200 countries and territories and is considered a leading global company in digital payments technology.
