Damascus, Feb. 3 (SANA) Syria’s central bank governor has urged commercial banks to manage cash fairly and facilitate withdrawals after complaints from customers about limited access to funds.
Central Bank Governor Abdulkader Husrieh said banks should take all necessary steps to ensure equitable distribution of available liquidity and improve customer services, according to a statement he posted on Tuesday.
The remarks came in response to inquiries about some customers being unable to withdraw money from their accounts, he said.
Husrieh stressed that liquidity management is the responsibility of each bank and outlined priorities that include meeting as many withdrawal requests as possible, giving precedence to salary payments, ensuring fair access for small depositors, and improving currency exchange operations to broaden service coverage.
He warned that bank branches found in violation of regulations would face penalties under existing laws, adding that maintaining public confidence in the banking system is essential to supporting liquidity in the wider economy.
Earlier, the central bank published a list of licensed currency exchange centers operating in several provinces, including Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, Hama, Lattakia and Daraa.
