Oil gains slightly as gold surges past $5,000 amid geopolitical tensions

Washington, Jan. 26 (SANA) Oil prices edged higher on Monday, extending last week’s gains, as investors monitored rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Brent crude rose 0.18% to $66 a barrel, while U.S. WTI crude gained 0.16% to $61.17 a barrel. Both benchmarks recorded weekly gains of about 2.7%, settling at their highest levels since Jan. 14, driven in part by expectations that a U.S. aircraft carrier strike group could soon deploy to the region, CNBC Arabia reported.

Gold hit a new milestone, trading above $5,000 per ounce, as investors sought safe-haven assets amid global uncertainty. Spot gold jumped 1.67% to $5,065.75 an ounce, while U.S. gold futures rose 1.6% to $5,062.30 an ounce. Analysts cited U.S.-NATO disputes over Greenland as an additional factor fueling demand.

Other precious metals saw mixed movements: silver climbed 2.52% to $105.54 an ounce, palladium rose 0.31% to $2,016.25, and platinum edged down 0.03% to $2,766.30, according to market data.
