Damascus, May 22 (SANA) The Adawi Arab Cultural Center in Damascus hosted a seminar on Thursday examining the artistic and historical significance of Islamic architecture and its role in shaping the city’s identity over the centuries.
The seminar, titled Exploring the Aesthetics of Islamic Architecture in Damascus, focused on the relationship between architecture, spirituality and daily life in the Syrian capital. Speakers highlighted how mosques, palaces, caravanserais, baths and traditional houses reflected the cultural and social character of old Damascus.
Participants discussed architectural features associated with the city’s Islamic heritage, including Arabic calligraphy, mosaics, arches, domes, minarets and geometric and floral ornamentation, which remain defining elements of Damascus’ historic landscape.
Speakers also referred to prominent landmarks such as the Umayyad Mosque and Azm Palace as examples of the city’s enduring architectural and cultural legacy.
Several attendees stressed the importance of preserving traditional Damascene architectural features and incorporating elements of the city’s historic identity into contemporary urban design.
