Idlib, April 19 (SANA) The Directorate of Antiquities in Idlib Province, in collaboration with the Ghaith for Humanity Association, organized a cultural event at the National Museum in Idlib to celebrate the preservation of cultural heritage. This event underscores the importance of cultural heritage and aims to promote a sense of identity among generations.
The event featured an interactive ambiance, including informative presentations about the most significant heritage and archaeological sites in Syria that are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, with a particular focus on Idlib’s sites. It also included an exhibition of traditional crafts and industries, as well as displays of customs, traditions, and attire related to local weddings in the region.
Hassan Al-Ismail, the Director of Antiquities in Idlib, explained that the celebration’s goal is to protect cultural heritage and to educate new generations on its significance. He noted that Idlib is home to five archaeological sites recognized on the World Heritage List.
Fatima Shahada, the Director of the Heritage Revival Project at the Ghaith Association, mentioned that a documentary showcasing Syrian heritage was presented to raise awareness among participants about the importance of safeguarding both popular and cultural heritage.
Participants emphasized that the protection of heritage is a collective responsibility, highlighting the need to foster a sense of belonging among future generations. This initiative ties into the observance of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), which is celebrated annually on April 18, emphasizing the critical importance of protecting cultural heritage and enhancing awareness of its value, especially in Idlib Province, which is rich in unique historical sites.
