Information Minister: European Parliament resolution arbitrary action and flagrant violation of media freedom

Damascus, SANA – Information Minister Ramez Terjman stressed Thursday that the European Parliament’s resolution to counter the foreign, Russian in particular, media outlets is an arbitrary action and a blatant violation of media laws and the freedom of media work.

On Wednesday, the European Parliament adopted a resolution aimed at combating other countries’ media, including Russia. A total of 691 MPs were present at the session, 304 of whom voted in favor of the resolution, 179 voted against it while 208 abstained from voting.
Terjman told Sputnik News Agency that this measure is a continuation of the repressive approach and the silencing policy towards the media institutions that offer a room for freedom of expression with high professionalism, adding that today the reality of these Western states claiming democracy is disclosed.
The Minister expressed the Syrian media institutions’ and his own solidarity with Sputnik News Agency and RT Channel, saying ” We, in the Information Ministry, assert our solidarity with Sputnik and RT, and as we said in the past ‘Here Cairo…from Damascus’ in the wake of the tripartite aggression against Egypt… we say today Here Sputnik from Damascus and Here RT from Damascus.”

Terjman continued to say that all those who work in Sputnik and RT are real heroes, considering that the European Parliament’s resolution represents a badge of honor.
