DGAM: 99% of Syrian museums’ contents kept in safe locations

Damascus, SANA – Director of Museum Affairs at the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums (DGAM) Ahmad Deeb stated that due to the threats posed to archeological artifacts due to the terrorist war on Syria, the DGAM has emptied showrooms and transported artifacts from most museums to protect them from theft and vandalism.

In a statement to SANA, Deeb said that 99% of the museums’ contents are being kept in safe areas, noting that the Raqqa and Deir Attiya museums were both vandalized and looted by terrorist organizations.

He explained that there are 41 museums in Syria, which include first-tier museums and second-tier museums that are dedicated for folklore and customs, and that these museums used to have large numbers of visitors and tourists prior to the crisis, particularly in Damascus and Aleppo.
