Health Minister: Humanitarian organizations should coordinate with the ministry in providing aid

Damascus, SANA – Health Minister Nizar Yazigi called on humanitarian organizations to send medical assistance to the ministry to ensure more efficient distribution in needy places.

During a meeting with the head and members of the visiting delegation from Defending Syria Association in Sweden on Wednesday, the minister noted that the medicinal aid provided by humanitarian organizations meets only small part of the patients’ need as it is sent through civil associations and distributed randomly.

Therefore, he said, it is necessary to have coordination and cooperation between the ministry, the international organizations and the civil associations to identify needs and deliver aid to those in need.

Minister Yazigi noted that the national medicinal industry provides the local market with 89% of the required medicines at reasonable prices, while medicines for chronic diseases are being secured through friendly countries including Iran and Russia, pointing out that work is under way to establish new medicine factories.

In turn, George Maqdisi Elias, head of the delegation and the other members expressed their desire to provide assistance to contribute to improving the health situation in Syria, supporting treatment of patients and the rebuilding of hospitals and securing health and medical supplies, with the minister promising help to facilitate measures for the delegation to provide such assistance.
